Breaking down long hydrocarbon chains into shorter, more useful ones. Some of them will be unsaturated, so contain C=C double bonds. There are 2 types of cracking - catalytic cracking using zeolite and a temperature of 550 degC and steam cracking using an even higher temperature of 800degC without catalyst.
