Travel in the winter in Alaska is particularly difficult. Firstly there are the snowy conditions and road closures due to the freezing conditions. During the winter there is very little sunlight hours, so travel is often in the dark in sub zero conditions. Most roads are very icy and some areas can only be reached by helicopter, snowmobile or skis and sled dogs.
