Why did the Republicans pressurise Lincoln into making the war about slavery?

Hello Beaulah, so to my knowledge the reason the Republicans pressurised Lincoln into making the war about slavery was they new a compromise could not exist to solve the difference between the free and slave states regarding the power of the notional government to prohibit slavery in territories that had not yet become states.
