The best way to approach this question is to find 1/16 of 640. This can be done by dividing 640 by 16 -which gives us the answer of 40.
By spotting that 1/16 multiplied by 12 gives 12/16, we must also multiply 40 by 12- which gives us an answer of 480.
Therefore 12/16 of 640 is 480.

The number 1 rule to remember when finding fraction of amounts is '' Divide by the bottom, times by the top''.
So in this case you would do 640/16 = 40, and then 'times by the top' so 40 x 12= 480.
