Urban Growth in LICs & NEEs Flashcards
All 8 cards in this deck
Where is Lagos, and why is it nationally and internationally important?
In south-west Nigeria on the Gulf of Guinea coast; Nigeria's largest city and main port, a financial centre for West Africa and home to the Nollywood film industry.
Give the two causes of the rapid growth of Lagos.
Rural–urban migration from poorer rural areas of northern Nigeria, and high natural increase because most migrants are young adults.
Give two social opportunities created by urban growth in an LIC/NEE city.
Better access to healthcare (hospitals and clinics) and to education (more schools and universities); also more homes connected to clean water and electricity.
Give one way urban industrial areas can stimulate economic development in an LIC/NEE.
They create jobs with higher, more regular wages, which raises spending and tax revenue that can be invested in services and infrastructure.
Give three problems faced by people living in squatter settlements such as Makoko in Lagos.
No clean piped water or sanitation, so disease spreads; illegal and unsafe electricity connections; low-paid informal jobs and high crime rates.
Give two environmental challenges caused by rapid urban growth in LIC/NEE cities.
Air pollution from traffic congestion and burning waste; water pollution from untreated sewage and industrial waste; waste dumped in streets or open landfill.
Give two main features of the Favela Bairro Project in Rio de Janeiro.
Streets were paved, lit and connected to clean water, sewerage and electricity; homes were rebuilt in brick and services such as health clinics, childcare and job training were provided.
What features in a photograph would tell you it shows a squatter settlement (slum) in an LIC/NEE city?
Housing built from scrap materials (corrugated iron, wood, plastic), very high density with no planned roads, and no piped water, sewers or waste collection.
