'Jane Eyre' is written in first person, as an older Jane looking back on her life. Because of this, we see Jane's experiences throughout her life as memories, so we understand the feelings she felt at the time, as well as her interpretation of events as she looks back. For example, we read how Jane now understands that the strange light in the red room came from a lantern in the garden, not the ghost she was originally convinced was present. The novel is a bildungsroman, so it chronicles the growing up of its protagonist.
