Big question! In short, it's a theorem suggested by Fermat, but since proved, that every positive integer can be written as the sum (add) of 3 (or fewer) triangle number, 4 (or fewer) square numbers, 5 (or fewer) pentagonal numbers etc, relating to the number of sides.
