Two variables are in inverse proportion if the effect of increasing the one decreases the other. For instance, when calculating the gravitational force between two celestial objects using Newton's law of gravitation, the force between them is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Therefore, if the distance between two planets double, the force is 4 times smaller:
