Character Encoding Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What is a character set?

A collection of characters a computer recognises, each represented by a unique binary code.

How many bits per character does ASCII use, and how many characters can it represent?

7 bits per character, representing 128 characters.

What is the advantage of Unicode over ASCII?

It can represent a far greater range of characters, including the alphabets of many languages and special symbols such as emoji.

How many characters can a character set with nn bits per character represent?
e.g. 8 bits per character

2n2^n characters.
e.g. 8 bits gives 256 characters.

What does it mean that character codes run in sequence?
e.g. 'A' has the code 65

Letters are given consecutive codes in order, so 'B' is 66 and 'C' is 67. Lower-case letters and digits also run in sequence.

How do the first 128 character codes of Unicode relate to ASCII?

They are the same: Unicode uses the same codes as ASCII for codes 0 to 127.
