Imaginative Writing Flashcards

What is the difference between a description and a story?
A description captures a place or moment through detail and mood. A story needs a character and a sense of change.
What does "show, don't tell" mean?
Letting details create the feeling instead of naming it: not 'The kitchen felt lonely' but 'Two mugs on the draining board; one unused.'
When should you start a new paragraph in creative writing?
At a change of time, place, topic or speaker, or for effect, to mark a shift or isolate a key moment.
What is the effect of a one-sentence paragraph?
It isolates and emphasises a moment, creating a pause, shock or turning point: 'Then the lights went out.'
What is a cliché?
An overused phrase, such as 'as cold as ice', so familiar that the reader doesn't picture anything.
What is the difference between a recount and a story?
A recount tells what happened, often with reflection. A story shapes events for drama, with tension and a turning point.
