Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly visible part of everyday life, and education is no exception. From supporting lesson planning to helping students understand difficult concepts, AI has the potential to change the way teachers teach and students learn.
However, the real value of AI in education is not simply about using new technology. It is about using it purposefully, responsibly, and in ways that genuinely improve learning.
One of the biggest opportunities AI offers is the ability to support teachers with time-consuming tasks.
For example, teachers can use AI to generate initial ideas for lesson activities, create differentiated questions, produce examples for students, or help structure resources. It can also support the creation of quizzes, revision materials, and model responses.
This does not mean that AI replaces teacher expertise. A teacher still needs to check whether resources are accurate, appropriate for the curriculum, and suitable for the students in front of them.
Used effectively, AI can act as a starting point. It can reduce the time spent creating basic materials and allow teachers to focus more of their attention on explanations, feedback, relationships, and support for individual students.
AI can also give students additional opportunities to learn independently.
A student struggling with a concept may be able to ask for another explanation, request a simpler example, or practise similar questions. This can be particularly useful outside normal lesson time, when a teacher may not be immediately available.
In subjects such as GCSE Computing and A-Level Computing, AI tools can help students explore programming concepts, identify possible errors in code, and compare different approaches to solving a problem.
However, there is an important distinction between receiving support and simply being given an answer.
If students become dependent on AI to complete their work, they may miss the thinking, problem-solving, and resilience that learning is supposed to develop. Schools, therefore, need to teach students how to use AI to support their thinking rather than replace it.
Schools have always had to prepare young people for the world they will enter after their education.
As AI becomes increasingly common in universities and workplaces, understanding how to use it effectively is likely to become an important part of digital literacy in subjects like GCSE ICT.
Students should understand how to write clear prompts, evaluate AI-generated information, and recognise that an AI response is not automatically correct.
Perhaps even more importantly, they need to develop the confidence to question what technology produces.
AI systems can make mistakes, provide outdated information, or present incorrect information convincingly. Students, therefore, still need strong subject knowledge, research skills, and critical thinking.
The ability to ask, “Is this actually correct?” may become just as important as knowing how to use the technology itself.
One of the most obvious concerns for schools is the possibility of students using AI to complete work for them.
A student could potentially generate an essay, homework response, or piece of code within seconds. This creates challenges for teachers who need to determine whether submitted work genuinely represents a student's understanding.
Simply banning AI may not provide a long-term solution.
Instead, schools may need to reconsider how some tasks are designed. Greater emphasis could be placed on classroom discussion, explaining reasoning, demonstrating practical skills, drafting work, and reflecting on the learning process.
Students also need clear expectations about when AI is acceptable and when its use would undermine the purpose of an assessment.
Despite rapid developments in technology, AI cannot replicate everything a teacher does.
Teachers understand their students. They notice when someone lacks confidence, recognise misconceptions, adapt explanations in real time, and build relationships that encourage young people to succeed.
Education is also much more than transferring information.
It involves communication, curiosity, resilience, creativity, collaboration, and personal development. Technology can support these areas, but it cannot replace the human relationships at the centre of effective teaching.
The strongest approach is, therefore, likely to be one in which teachers use AI selectively while continuing to apply their professional judgement.
AI presents schools with both opportunities and challenges.
Used well, it could help teachers work more efficiently, provide students with additional support, and develop skills that young people will increasingly need in the future.
Used poorly, it could encourage over-reliance, reduce independent thinking, and make it harder to know whether students have genuinely mastered what they are learning.
The goal should not be to use AI simply because it is available. Schools should ask whether a particular use of AI improves learning, supports teachers, or helps students develop valuable skills.
Ultimately, the future of AI in education should not be about replacing teachers or removing the need for students to think. It should be about using technology intelligently to enhance what good education already does best.
