Worried About Edexcel A-Level Maths Paper 1? Read this before results day.
Experienced qualified Teacher and Examiner Trupti discusses the controversial A-Level Edexcel paper 1 Maths exam and gives her insight into how these papers are marked and highlights that one difficult paper does not mean you have failed.
If you've walked out of Edexcel A-Level Maths Paper 1 convinced you've underperformed, you're far from alone. Every year, after the first exam, I hear the same comments from students: "That was awful. I’ve failed. I’ve lost my university place."
This year has been no different. Paper 1 prompted plenty of discussion online, with many students feeling it was more challenging than expected.
As an A-Level Mathematics teacher and examiner, I'd like to explain what happens next, and why it's far too early to assume the worst.
Many students felt this year's paper was more demanding than the past papers they'd practised. The first paper often feels the most difficult because it's your first opportunity to perform under real exam conditions.
Exam boards don't simply repeat previous papers, so some questions will feel unfamiliar or may require you to apply familiar ideas in a less familiar way. That can make a paper feel much worse than it actually was.
After a day or two, many students realise it wasn't quite as bad as they first thought. Immediately after an exam, your attention naturally focuses on the questions you couldn't finish, the answers you changed, or the mistakes you noticed on the way home. You are much less likely to replay the questions you answered correctly, and that can create a very misleading impression of how you actually performed.
This is the question I would most like students to understand. As an examiner, I don’t look at a script and simply decide whether an answer is "right" or "wrong." The marking process is carefully structured, and the aim is to ensure that students are awarded the marks they have earned for the mathematics they have shown.
Questions are broken down into individual marking points, and examiners are trained to apply the mark scheme consistently. That means a multi-step question is not necessarily all-or-nothing.
For example, suppose a question requires you to:
If your setup is correct but you make an algebraic error later, you may still receive credit for the correct work you have shown. If you then continue using your incorrect result consistently, further marks may sometimes be available for a correct method based on that result.
This is why showing your working matters so much. A final answer that is wrong does not automatically mean that every mark associated with the question has been lost.
One thing students may not realise is how much quality assurance sits behind the marking process.
Examiners are trained and standardised before marking begins. During marking, if an examiner is unsure about how a particular response should be treated, they do not simply make an arbitrary decision and move on. The response can be referred for further consideration through the senior examining structure.
The marking process is continually monitored and refined so that the mark scheme is applied consistently across different types of student responses. Examiners also have regular quality checks during the marking period, and random samples of work are checked to ensure that examiners are continuing to mark at the required standard and consistently with the wider marking team.
This is not simply a case of one examiner looking at a script once and making a quick judgement. Different examiners work as part of teams, often marking specific sections or questions. Their marking is monitored to ensure consistency, and the process includes checks designed to identify and address variation in marking standards.
I cannot give the exact operational details of the marking process, but the important point for students is this: the marks on your paper are not based on a casual or purely subjective judgement. The mark scheme, examiner training, senior guidance and ongoing quality checks all form part of a process designed to ensure that the mathematics you have written is considered carefully and that marking is applied consistently.
One of the most common problems I see is not necessarily a lack of mathematical understanding. It is students stopping too soon.
A student may write one line, realise they are unsure, and leave the rest of the question blank. From an examiner's point of view, there is then very little to credit.
Another student may make the same initial mistake but continue: substitute their values, rearrange the equation, show a method, attempt the next stage, and reach a conclusion. That second student has given the examiner something to work with. Even if the final answer is incorrect, the script may contain valid steps that can earn marks.
Under pressure, students also make very common mistakes: copying a number incorrectly from the question, losing a minus sign, using the correct formula but substituting inaccurately, making an arithmetic error and then abandoning the question, or giving an answer without enough working to show how it was obtained.
These are not unusual examination behaviours. Examiners see them repeatedly.
The important point is that one mistake does not necessarily destroy an entire question, and one difficult question does not necessarily destroy an entire paper.
Grade boundaries are not simply fixed percentages decided before students sit the exam.
The papers are marked first, and the difficulty of the assessments and student performance are then considered as part of the process of setting grade boundaries. The aim is to maintain a consistent standard from one examination series to another.
In practical terms, if a paper is more difficult and students nationally achieve lower marks, the grade boundaries can be lower. If a paper is easier, they can be higher.
This is important because your result is not determined by how difficult the paper felt to you personally. You do not need to get every question right to achieve a high grade. You do not need to feel confident walking out of the exam room to have performed well. And you certainly cannot reliably determine your final grade from how the paper felt immediately afterwards.

Your final A-Level Mathematics grade is based on your combined marks across all three papers. One paper alone does not determine your result. If Paper 1 did not go as well as you hoped, strong performances on Papers 2 and 3 can make a significant difference to your overall total.
I saw this happen with a student just last year. After sitting Papers 1 and 2, he was convinced that both had been a complete write-off. He was particularly worried because he had his heart set on studying engineering and genuinely believed that he had lost his chance of achieving the grades he needed.
The panic continued after the exams. He was comparing his performance with previous years' papers, trying to predict where the grade boundaries might be, and worrying that the boundaries would be higher than before. None of that helped him. In fact, his predictions were completely wrong. When the results arrived, he had achieved an A*!
The student had not suddenly performed perfectly on every question. He had simply been far too harsh in his own assessment of his performance. He had also underestimated the marks he had earned for his working and had no reliable way of knowing what the final grade boundaries would be.
That experience is worth remembering because students often try to calculate their final result from incomplete information. At this stage, you do not know how many marks you actually earned for working, how other students performed nationally, where the grade boundaries will be set, or how your marks on the other papers will affect your overall total.
There are simply too many unknowns to make a reliable prediction. Many students recover strongly after a disappointing first paper.
Missing your offer doesn't automatically mean you've lost your place. Universities may have flexibility depending on the course, the number of places available and the circumstances of the admissions cycle.
If your results are lower than your offer, contact the admissions team promptly, explain your circumstances, ask whether there is any flexibility, and check the university's own admissions information. You should also be aware of the options available through UCAS Clearing.
A review of marking can be requested through your school or college if there is a genuine reason to believe that marks may not have been awarded correctly. However, a paper simply feeling difficult is not, by itself, evidence that your work was marked incorrectly.
If you are concerned about a result, speak to your exams officer or Head of Mathematics promptly. They can explain the available post-results services (like Pearson Edexcel: Post Results Services) and help you understand whether a review is appropriate.
Students almost always remember the questions they struggled with far more than those they answered well. They remember the lost minus sign, the question they ran out of time on, the answer they changed, the part of the paper that looked unfamiliar. They often forget the marks they earned quietly and routinely throughout the exam.
From an examiner's perspective, a script is not judged on how confident a student appeared when they left the exam hall. It is judged on the mathematics that is actually written down. That is why it is too early to decide that you have failed.
You may have earned method marks you have forgotten about. You may have made fewer mistakes than you think. Other students may also have found the paper difficult. Your performance on Papers 2 and 3 may be stronger than you expect, and the final grade boundaries will not be known until the assessment process has been completed.
The marking process itself is also far more carefully controlled than many students realise. Scripts are marked using a structured mark scheme, examiners are trained and monitored, uncertain responses can be referred for further consideration, and quality checks are carried out throughout the marking process to support consistency.
So don't spend the next few weeks up to results day trying to reconstruct every answer from memory or comparing yourself with unofficial answers online. You have done the exam. The marks will be awarded for the mathematics you showed. One paper does not define your A-Level.
