Most people live near the coast in Alaska, this is because the climate is much warmer here, and there is much easier access to food in the form of oceanic fish and sealing hunting. Since the land is so barren there is no terrestrial farming to feed its population. As well as this, a large proportion of its economy is reliant on commercial fishing, so this is how the majority of people bring in income.
