If a function is increasing for the interval on which its first derivative is positive. e.g. f(x) = 3x^2 - 5x + 6. dy/dx = 6x - 5. If dy/dx > 0, 6x - 5 > 0 then 6x > 5 then x > 5/6. Therefore we realize that the function is increasing for x > 5/6.
