In a transverse wave the direction of energy transfer is perpendicular to the motion of the wave. Energy is transferred through vibrations of the particles that make up that type of wave.

In electromagnetic waves, energy is transferred through vibrations of electric and magnetic fields, whilst in water waves, energy is transferred through the vibration of the water particles.
