The refractive index is a measure of the bending of a ray of electromagnetic radiation, such as light, when passing from one medium into another due to the change in speed of the radiation. The refractive index is the ratio of speed of radiation (such as light) in a vacuum to that of the speed of light in another medium (such as air, glass, or water).
