There are quite a number of equations allowing us to calculate acceleration.
We define acceleration as the rate of change of velocity, so one equation would be
acceleration = change in velocity/time
If we define an initial velocity as u, and a final velocity as v, then the change in velocity would be v-u.
If we let t stand for the time between our initial and final measurements, then our equation becomes:
a = (v-u)/t
This allows us to find an average acceleration over the time period we're studying.
