Kinetic energy is defined as the energy possessed by a mass due to its motion.
Kinetic Energy is sometimes referred to as the energy of motion. Objects that move (relative to something else) have kinetic energy (relative to that other thing). For example, a car moving along a road has kinetic energy relative to the earth.
A common misconception is that the kinetic energy is somehow "used up" in moving the object, but this is not correct. As long as the object is moving, it has kinetic energy.
Kinetic Energy can be calculated using KE = 1/2mv^2
