One theory states that the Earth's early atmosphere was mainly carbon dioxide, with little or no oxygen, and that these gases came from intense volcanic activity.

A student also found this evidence.
- Rocks formed about 3.8 billion years ago contain iron minerals that only form in water containing little or no oxygen.
- Rocks formed about 2.4 billion years ago contain bands of iron oxide, which only form when oxygen is present.
- The oldest fossils of algae are about 2.7 billion years old.
- Carbonate rocks up to 3.5 billion years old have been found.
- No samples of the early atmosphere exist. Some scientists suggest that the gases in the early atmosphere came from comets, not from volcanoes.
