2D & 3D Shapes Flashcards

All 23 cards in this deck

Which quadrilateral has 4 right angles and 4 sides of equal length?

A square.

What is the mathematical name of a quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides?

A trapezium.

State the properties of a rhombus.

4 equal sides, 2 pairs of parallel sides, opposite angles equal, diagonals cross at right angles.

State the properties of a kite.

2 pairs of equal adjacent sides, one pair of equal opposite angles, diagonals cross at right angles, no parallel sides.

What is an isosceles triangle?

A triangle with 2 equal sides and 2 equal angles.

True or false? Every square is also a rectangle.

True. A rectangle has 4 right angles with opposite sides equal, and a square has all of these.

How many faces, edges and vertices does a cube have?

6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices.

What is a prism?

A solid with the same cross-section all along its length, with two identical parallel end faces.

How many faces, edges and vertices does a triangular prism have?

5 faces, 9 edges, 6 vertices.

What is the mathematical name of the solid with one flat circular face and a curved surface rising to a single point?

A cone.

How many faces, edges and vertices does a square-based pyramid have?

5 faces, 8 edges, 5 vertices.

True or false? A sphere has one vertex.

False. A sphere has one curved surface, no edges and no vertices.

What is a net of a solid?

A 2D shape that folds up to make the 3D solid.

Which 2D shapes make up the net of a cube?

6 identical squares.

Which 2D shapes make up the net of a triangular prism?

2 identical triangles and 3 rectangles.

Which 2D shapes make up the net of a square-based pyramid?

1 square and 4 triangles.

What are the steps to name the solid that a net folds into?

e.g. a net made of 2 circles and 1 rectangle

  1. Name the flat shapes in the net: 2 circles and 1 rectangle.
  2. Spot the pair of identical faces — these become the ends: the 2 circles.
  3. Name the solid with that cross-section: a cylinder.

True or false? Any 6 squares joined edge to edge form a net of a cube.

False. Only certain arrangements fold up into a cube (there are 11 different nets).

What is the plan of a solid?

The view of the solid looking down on it from directly above.

What is the front elevation of a solid?

The view of the solid seen from directly in front of it.

What are the steps to draw the plan, front elevation and side elevation of a cuboid on a centimetre grid?

e.g. a cuboid 4 cm long, 3 cm deep and 2 cm high

  1. Plan: draw the view from above — a 4 cm by 3 cm rectangle.
  2. Front elevation: draw the view from the front — a 4 cm by 2 cm rectangle.
  3. Side elevation: draw the view from the side — a 3 cm by 2 cm rectangle.

What are the plan, front elevation and side elevation of a cylinder standing on its circular face?

Plan: a circle. Front and side elevations: identical rectangles (width = diameter, height = height of cylinder).

True or false? The plan of a solid shows its height.

False. The plan shows length and width (seen from above); the height is shown in the elevations.
