"I'm revising for hours, but my grades aren't improving."


As a Science teacher and tutor, this is something I hear regularly from students preparing for their GCSEs.


The good news is that most students aren't failing because they lack ability. More often, they're using revision techniques that feel productive but don't actually improve long-term understanding or exam performance.


If you're preparing for GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, or GCSE Physics, here are five common revision mistakes - and what you should do instead.


Mistake 1 - Reading Notes Instead of Testing Yourself

One of the biggest mistakes students make is reading through their exercise books or revision guides over and over again.


It feels like revision because you're looking at the content, but recognising information isn't the same as remembering it.


The best revision happens when your brain has to work to retrieve information.


Try this instead 

Close your book and ask yourself:


  • What are the products of photosynthesis?
  • What is ionic bonding?
  • What affects the resistance of a wire?


If you can't answer, that's completely normal - it simply tells you what to revise next. Active recall is far more effective than passive reading.


Mistake 2 - Avoiding Exam Questions Until the Last Minute

Many students spend weeks making beautiful revision notes but don't attempt past paper questions until just before the exam.


Unfortunately, GCSE Science isn't just about knowing the content - it's about applying it.


Exam questions often require students to:


  • interpret data
  • analyse graphs
  • explain scientific processes
  • use correct scientific vocabulary


These skills all improve with practice.


Try this instead

Complete a few exam questions after every revision session, ideally on the topic you just covered.


Even ten minutes of practice helps you become familiar with how GCSE questions are written and what might be missing from your knowledge to answer without any notes.


Mistake 3 - Memorising Without Understanding

Students sometimes try to memorise entire mark schemes.


While this might help for one or two questions, it doesn't prepare you for unfamiliar problems.


Science is built on understanding. When you understand why something happens, you're much more likely to answer new questions correctly and instinctively remember your reasoning, even under exam pressure.

Whenever you learn something, ask yourself:


  1. Why does this happen?
  2. Can I explain it to someone else?
  3. Can I think of a real-life example?


If you can teach it, you've probably understood it.


Mistake 4 - Ignoring Topics You Find Difficult

It's tempting to spend revision time on topics you already enjoy because they feel rewarding.


The downside is that your weakest topics remain weak.


Every GCSE Science paper contains questions from across the specification, so avoiding certain areas can cost valuable marks.


Try this instead

Create a simple traffic-light system to create a personalised list of priority topics to build your own revision timetable.


🟢 Green - Confident

🟡 Amber - Need more practice

🔴 Red - Don't understand yet


Focus most of your revision on the amber and red topics first. That's where you'll make the biggest gains.


Mistake 5 - Forgetting That Science Is Connected

Students often revise Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as separate subjects.


In reality, scientific ideas are always connected.


For example:


  • Particle theory helps explain changes of state and gas pressure.
  • Energy transfers appear throughout Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Mathematics is used across all three sciences.


Looking for these links helps you remember information more effectively. 


A Revision Routine That Works

Instead of spending hours highlighting textbooks, try this one-hour revision session.


  • Review one topic - 10 minutes
  • Use active recall to write down everything you can remember - 20 minutes
  • Complete exam questions - 20 minutes
  • Mark your answers and identify what needs improving - 10 minutes


This approach combines knowledge, retrieval and exam practice - the three ingredients that consistently improve GCSE performance.

GCSE Science can seem challenging, but success isn't about being naturally "good at science."


It's about using the right strategies consistently.
