Education in 2026 is experiencing one of its biggest periods of change in decades. Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday learning; schools are continuing to deal with attendance challenges; teachers are adapting to new technology; and questions about what students actually need to learn are becoming increasingly important.

Perhaps the biggest question facing education today is no longer whether technology belongs in the classroom. It is how we can use technology without losing the human side of learning.

AI Has Officially Entered the Classroom

Artificial intelligence has quickly moved from being an interesting new technology to something students and teachers regularly encounter.

Students can now use generative AI to explain difficult concepts, brainstorm ideas, summarise information, and practise questions in subjects like GCSE Maths, GCSE Physics, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Biology, GCSE Computing, or GCSE Combined Science, while receiving personalised feedback. Teachers can also use AI to support lesson planning and reduce administrative workload.

In England, this change is already influencing education policy. In May 2026, the Department for Education updated its guidance and training materials for schools and colleges on understanding, interacting with, and safely using generative AI.

The Education Endowment Foundation is also expanding its research into educational technology. Its research highlights potential uses, including personalised learning, formative feedback, and teacher workload reduction.

One trial involving ChatGPT for lesson preparation reported that participating teachers identified a 31% weekly time-saving compared with teachers who did not use generative AI.

However, faster is not automatically better.

If AI provides an answer immediately, students may have fewer opportunities to struggle with problems, make mistakes, and develop their own reasoning. The challenge for educators is therefore to decide which tasks technology should support and which thinking processes students still need to practise independently.

The Question Is Moving from “Can We Use AI?” to “When Should We Use It?”

Academic integrity has consequently become an important issue.

Ofqual released new resources for schools in March 2026, addressing AI and coursework. The guidance recognises that students are already using AI for activities such as brainstorming, research, summarising, and writing, while making clear that submitting AI-generated coursework without appropriate disclosure can constitute malpractice.

Assessment itself is changing too.

Ofqual has stated that AI cannot currently be used as the sole marker for assessments forming part of regulated qualifications, although it sees potential for AI to assist with lower-stakes and classroom assessments.

This creates an important distinction.

Education does not necessarily need to prevent students from using AI. Instead, students need to understand how to use AI critically, responsibly, and transparently.

Knowing how to question an AI-generated answer may eventually become just as important as knowing how to search for information online.

Attendance Remains a Serious Challenge

While technology attracts much of the attention, another challenge is happening away from the screen.

Attendance remains a significant concern in English schools.

Department for Education statistics covering the 2025 to 2026 academic year, up to July 2026, recorded an overall attendance rate of 93.12%. More significantly, 18.78% of pupils were persistently absent, meaning they had missed at least 10% of their possible school sessions.

This matters because education cannot simply be improved through better technology.

A sophisticated AI learning platform provides limited benefit to a student who is disengaged from education altogether.

Schools therefore face two challenges simultaneously: modernising learning and strengthening students' connection with school, teachers, and their wider learning communities.

Teachers Are Becoming More Important, Not Less

When generative AI first became widely available, one concern was that technology might eventually replace parts of the teaching profession.

The reality emerging in 2026 looks more complicated.

AI can generate worksheets, suggest lesson activities, and explain concepts. What it cannot easily reproduce is the relationship between a teacher and a student.

A teacher can recognise when a student has lost confidence. They can change an explanation after seeing confusion on someone's face. They can encourage discussion, challenge assumptions, and understand the social dynamics of a classroom.

England is continuing to invest in its teaching workforce. Government figures published in June 2026 reported 4,654 additional secondary, special school, and further education teachers towards its target of 6,500, alongside a 13% increase in people training to teach.

The teacher of the future may therefore be less of an information provider and increasingly a facilitator, mentor, and guide. For example, they might guide students through complex, multi-step problems in A-Level Maths, A-Level Physics, A-Level Chemistry, and A-Level Biology.

Education Is Also Becoming an Equity Question

Another important issue is who benefits from educational technology.

Not every student has the same devices, internet access, home environment, or ability to use AI effectively.

The Education Endowment Foundation warns that evidence regarding EdTech remains mixed, particularly for disadvantaged pupils. Without thoughtful implementation, technology could potentially widen rather than reduce existing educational inequalities.

The wider socioeconomic picture reinforces this concern. In England, 26.5% of pupils were eligible for free school meals in 2025 to 2026, representing more than 2.2 million pupils.

The future of education, therefore, cannot simply be about giving students access to the newest technology.

It must also be about ensuring that innovation genuinely improves opportunities for students from different backgrounds.

What Should Education Prepare Students for?

This may be the biggest question of all.

For generations, education has rewarded students for remembering information, producing written answers, and demonstrating knowledge under examination conditions.

AI challenges some of those assumptions.

When a student can generate a reasonable essay outline for GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature, A-Level English, or A-Level English Literature, or produce an explanation within seconds, education needs to place greater value on skills that require deeper human judgement.

Critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, curiosity, and the ability to evaluate information are likely to become increasingly valuable.

This conversation is happening internationally as well. UNESCO's Digital Learning Week in September 2026 will bring together education ministers, educators, technology companies, and students to discuss issues including AI safety, digital sovereignty, synthetic knowledge, and the future of education.

The Classroom of the Future Is Still Human

The most successful education systems will probably not be those that use the most technology.

They will be the ones that understand when technology improves learning and when it gets in the way.

AI offers enormous opportunities. It can help teachers save time, provide students with additional support, and make learning more personalised. But education has never simply been about accessing information.

It is about learning how to think.

As education continues to evolve in 2026, protecting curiosity, independent reasoning, meaningful relationships, and equal access to opportunity should remain at the centre of the classroom.

Technology may change how students learn, but the purpose of education should remain deeply human.
