1) Phospholipids: these comprise the majority of the plasma membrane, mediating cell compartmentalisation. 2) Cholesterol: scattered throughout the membrane, cholesterol helps to regulate the fluidity of the plasma membrane, supporting its structure. 3) Proteins: there are a vast number of proteins that reside in cell membranes, e.g. ion channels, transporters, pumps, enzymes and large complexes.
