1) Phospholipids: these comprise the majority of the plasma membrane, mediating cell compartmentalisation. 2) Cholesterol: scattered throughout the membrane, cholesterol helps to regulate the fluidity of the plasma membrane, supporting its structure. 3) Proteins: there are a vast number of proteins that reside in cell membranes, e.g. ion channels, transporters, pumps, enzymes and large complexes.

There are many molecules present in the animal cell membranes. However, three important ones come up immediately:

  1. Trans-membrane proteins. These proteins penetrate the cell membrane creating a channel to and fro the internal and external environment of the cell. These channels help hydrophilic molecules, such as water molecules and ions, to pass through the membrane.
  2. Cholesterol. Cholesterol molecules are found in the animal cell membrane to give it flexibility.
  3. Receptor proteins. These proteins help with the signaling of the cells and their communication. These receptors and used from communication from inside the cell to the outside and vice versa.
