July 4 , 1776. The signing of the United States Declaration of Independence occurred primarily on August 2, 1776, at the Pennsylvania State House . The 56 delegates to the EEUU represented the 13 colonies, 12 of which voted to approve the it on July 4, 1776. The New York delegation abstained because they had not yet received instructions from Albany to vote for independence. The Declaration proclaimed the  the clononies that signgned were now "free and independent States", no longer colonies of the British Empire

Hello Wilfred! Great question. The Declaration of Independence is generally considered to have been signed on the 4th of July, 1776. But there's actually a bit of historical debate on this topic, because some of the people credited with signing the original Declaration weren't elected to Congress until after that time. Allegedly, only about 34 delegates actually signed on the original date of July 4th, with the others adding their signatures after the 2nd of August. So, to put it briefly, the most accurate answer would be somewhere between 4th July and 2nd August, but most historians would be happy to accept July 4th 1776 as an answer to this question. Hope this helps!
