An object will sink if it's density is higher than water, it will float if it is lower. Density of a substance is the mass per unit of volume. An object with higher density than water must have higher mass per unit of volume than the water.

The more dense a substance is, the heavier it feels for its size.

If an object is more dense than than water it will sink, and if it is less dense than water it will float.
