Midpoint of a Line Flashcards

All 5 cards in this deck

What is the midpoint of a line segment?

The point exactly halfway between the two endpoints.

What is the formula for the midpoint of the line segment joining (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) and (x2,y2)(x_2, y_2)?

(x1+x22, y1+y22)\left(\dfrac{x_1+x_2}{2},\ \dfrac{y_1+y_2}{2}\right)

What are the steps to find the midpoint from the coordinates of the two endpoints?

e.g. A(2,1)A(2, 1) and B(6,7)B(6, 7)

  1. Add the xx-coordinates and halve: (2+6)÷2=4(2+6)\div 2 = 4.
  2. Add the yy-coordinates and halve: (1+7)÷2=4(1+7)\div 2 = 4.
  3. Midpoint =(4,4)= (4, 4).

True or false? The coordinates of a midpoint are always whole numbers.

False.

They can be decimals or fractions, e.g. the midpoint of (−3,−2)(-3, -2) and (2,4)(2, 4) is (−0.5,1)(-0.5, 1).

True or false? The midpoint of ABAB is the same point as the midpoint of BABA.

True.

You can add the endpoint coordinates in either order before halving.
