Changes in Energy Flashcards

All 3 cards in this deck

What does the width of each arrow on a Sankey diagram represent?

The amount of energy transferred — it is drawn to scale.

What are the steps to draw a Sankey diagram for an energy transfer?
e.g. a lamp given 100 J which transfers 20 J by light

  1. Draw one input arrow, width to scale for the total input: 100 J
  2. Branch off the useful output: 20 J by light
  3. Branch the wasted energy downwards: 100−20=80100 - 20 = 80 J to the thermal store

On an energy transfer diagram, what must the outputs add up to?

The total energy input, because energy cannot be created or destroyed.
