Echo Sounding Flashcards
All 4 cards in this deck
What is echo sounding?
Using high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) reflected from the sea bed or objects to measure water depth and detect objects in deep water.
Give two things echo sounding is used to detect in deep water.
The sea bed (water depth), and objects such as shipwrecks, submarines or shoals of fish.
Besides the echo time, what must be known to calculate water depth by echo sounding?
The speed of sound in water (about 1500 m/s).
True or false? In echo sounding, the water depth is equal to the speed of sound in water multiplied by the echo time.
False. That gives the total distance there and back — the depth is half of it.
