Item C: Thornbeck Garden Centre Ltd
Thornbeck Garden Centre Ltd is owned and managed by Claire Whitfield. The garden centre is on an out-of-town site and sells plants, tools and outdoor furniture. It employs 24 people, nine of whom work part-time in the garden centre café. At weekends the café serves around 300 customers a day.
The café supervisor is retiring in three months. The supervisor orders all the café stock, writes the weekly rotas for the nine part-time staff, keeps the food hygiene records and serves customers at busy times. Claire has never written down what the supervisor actually does.
Last year Claire needed a gardening assistant. She wrote a short advert, interviewed two people for ten minutes each and appointed one of them. The new employee could not use the machinery and left after six weeks.

Saltmere Hotel Ltd is a 40-bedroom hotel in the coastal town of Redmoor Bay. It is run by its managing director, Arjun Chakrabarti, and employs 32 people in housekeeping, the kitchen, the restaurant and reception. The hotel restaurant is also open to people who are not staying at the hotel.
The hotel's average score on an online review site has fallen from 4.6 to 3.9 out of 5. Most of the recent complaints are about slow service in the restaurant and mistakes with food orders.
