Cell Division Flashcards

All 11 cards in this deck

Name the stages of the cell cycle in order, starting with interphase.

Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis.

What happens during interphase of the cell cycle?

The DNA is copied (and the cell grows, making more sub-cellular structures).

In which stage of mitosis are the chromosomes lined up along the middle (equator) of the cell?

Metaphase.

In which stage of mitosis do the spindle fibres pull the chromosomes to either side (the poles) of the cell?

Anaphase.

How many daughter cells does mitosis produce, and what is their genetic nature?

Two daughter cells, genetically identical to each other and the parent cell, and diploid.

Give the three reasons why mitosis is important in living things.

For growth, for repair (of tissues/organs) and for asexual reproduction.

What is cancer?

The result of changes in cells that lead to uncontrolled cell division.

What is a tumour?

A mass (lump) of cells formed by uncontrolled cell division.

What happens during prophase of mitosis?

The chromosomes condense (coil up, becoming shorter and thicker) and the membrane around the nucleus breaks down.

What happens during telophase of mitosis?

A nuclear membrane re-forms around each of the two sets of chromosomes, so the cell now has two nuclei.

What happens during cytokinesis?

The whole cell splits in two: the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide, forming two daughter cells.
