Isotopes Flashcards

All 3 cards in this deck

What are isotopes?

Atoms of the same element with the same atomic number but a different number of neutrons.

True or false? Isotopes of an element have the same mass number but different numbers of neutrons.

False. They have the same atomic number and different numbers of neutrons, so their mass numbers differ.

Americium-241 has the symbol ²⁴¹₉₅Am. What must the symbol of another isotope of americium look like?

Same bottom number 95, different top number, e.g. ²⁴⁵₉₅Am.
