How to Answer Paper 2 Questions 1, 2, 4 and 5 Flashcards
All 10 cards in this deck
What do Paper 2 Questions 1, 2, 4 and 5 ask?
Short retrieval questions (AO1). Q1 (2 marks): identify two things from given lines of Text 1. Q2 (2 marks): give two things from a reprinted extract of Text 1. Q4 and Q5 (1 mark each): identify one thing from given lines of Text 2.
Which text does each Paper 2 question use?
Questions 1–3 are about Text 1. Questions 4–6 are about Text 2. Question 7 uses both. Answering from the wrong text scores nothing, and examiners report it every year.
How long should you spend on Paper 2 Questions 1, 2, 4 and 5?
A few minutes in total: together they're worth 6 of Section A's 56 marks, and Section A has about 1 hour 20 minutes. Keep the time for the 15-mark questions.
How much should you write for a Paper 2 1- or 2-mark question?
One short point per mark, each on its own line. A word, a phrase or a short sentence is enough. Copying out the whole section shows no selection and scores nothing.
Can you use your own words in Paper 2 Question 2?
Yes. Like Paper 1 Question 2, it accepts your own words or quotations, as long as both points come from the reprinted extract.
Why must your two points in Question 1 or 2 be different?
Each mark is for a separate thing. Two quotations that say the same thing in different words only earn one mark.
How do you avoid answering from outside the given lines?
Find the line numbers first and bracket them in the insert. Then read only those lines for the answer. A true detail from elsewhere in the text scores nothing.
What should you do before answering Question 1?
Read the introduction to Text 1 and then the whole text quickly, so you know what kind of text it is and who wrote it. Then go back to the given lines.
Question 4 says 'From lines 1–4, identify one thing the writer says about the market.' A student answers using Text 1. What do they score?
0. Question 4 is about Text 2. Check which text each question names before you answer.
Do Paper 2 Questions 1, 2, 4 and 5 reward analysis?
No. They reward finding the information the question asks for. Explaining techniques here wastes time you need for Questions 3 and 6.
