Nets of Solids Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What is a net of a solid?

A 2D shape that folds up to make the 3D solid.

Which 2D shapes make up the net of a cube?

6 identical squares.

Which 2D shapes make up the net of a triangular prism?

2 identical triangles and 3 rectangles.

Which 2D shapes make up the net of a square-based pyramid?

1 square and 4 triangles.

What are the steps to name the solid that a net folds into?

e.g. a net made of 2 circles and 1 rectangle

  1. Name the flat shapes in the net: 2 circles and 1 rectangle.
  2. Spot the pair of identical faces — these become the ends: the 2 circles.
  3. Name the solid with that cross-section: a cylinder.

True or false? Any 6 squares joined edge to edge form a net of a cube.

False. Only certain arrangements fold up into a cube (there are 11 different nets).
