Mean, Median & Mode Flashcards

All 8 cards in this deck

What is the mode of a set of data?

The value that occurs most often.

What is the median of a set of data?

The middle value when the data are put in order of size.

What are the steps to find the median of a list of values?

e.g. 7,3,5,9,47, 3, 5, 9, 4

  1. Put the values in order of size: 3,4,5,7,93, 4, 5, 7, 9
  2. Find the middle value: 55

How do you find the median when there is an even number of values?

e.g. 5,75, 7 are the two middle values

Add the two middle values and divide by 2.
(5+7)÷2=6(5+7)\div 2 = 6

True or false? You can find the median by taking the middle number of the list as it is written.

False. You must put the numbers in order of size first.

True or false? A set of data can have more than one mode.

True. If two or more values are equally most common, each is a mode.

What are the steps to work out the mean of a list of values?

e.g. 4,6,8,64, 6, 8, 6

  1. Add all the values: 4+6+8+6=244+6+8+6=24
  2. Count how many values there are: 44
  3. Divide the total by the count: 24÷4=624\div4=6

True or false? The mean of a list of values must be one of the values in the list.

False. The mean can be a value not in the list, e.g. the mean of 33 and 44 is 3.53.5.
