GUEST POST
Tutor Charlotte an experienced science teacher, trained examiner and full-time online tutor specialising in GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics tells us about her experience of tutoring home educated students.
Charlotte is proud to work with students around the world across a range of exam boards, including many who are home-educated.
By Charlotte M, experienced science teacher, trained examiner and full-time tutor.
One of the things I love most about working with home-educated students is that, for some of them, my lessons are their main experience of science. That means every lesson has to do more than simply cover the specification - it has to spark curiosity, encourage questions, and develop genuine scientific thinking.
For the Science GCSEs, students are expected to incorporate practical scientific methods and knowledge into their exams, and it can feel daunting to know how to approach this when learning from home. With the support of a qualified science teacher working 1:1 with home-educated students or Emotionally-Based School Avoidance (EBSA), parents can feel reassured that their child is covering the specification thoroughly.
Lessons are tailored using a range of teaching methods to fit the requirements of the exam board, while also developing the practical understanding students need for GCSE success. Having a trained examiner on hand to help navigate specifications and specific requirements is a great help to both parents and students, giving them plenty of opportunities to practise exam questions and past papers too.
I have taught in a range of educational settings, both in person and online. Delivering creative, engaging lessons that include practical, hands-on learning remotely is something I know well, enjoy, and encourage.
A lot of the science curriculum can be very abstract, so incorporating "real-life" applications helps students connect theory to practice. For the Chemistry GCSE, for example, students are expected to understand and apply practical knowledge of chromatography.
For home-educated students, I'll happily explain how to set up a very similar practical at home using common household items. Science is not restricted to a laboratory!
The same is true across all three sciences. In biology, we might investigate osmosis using potato chips and different sugar solutions from the kitchen cupboard, giving students hands-on experience of a core required practical without any specialist equipment. In physics, simple items like a torch, a mirror and a protractor are all it takes to explore reflection and refraction practically, rather than just reading about it on a page.
I also draw on my previous career as a professional chef, combining chemistry and cooking (or - as I like to call it, "edible science") to show students just how much science exists in everyday life.
One of the biggest advantages of 1:1 tuition is that every lesson can be tailored to the individual. We can work at their pace, revisit difficult concepts whenever necessary, and explore topics using different approaches until the ideas really click.
I often teach all three sciences to the same student, which helps them make connections between GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics. It also allows me to build a strong working relationship, understand how they learn best, and develop effective revision routines together.
As a former middle leader, I understand the importance of delivering content, assessing understanding, tracking data, and implementing intervention with the aim of supporting progress and improving grades.
I apply the same approach to my 1:1 tuition, and I believe that having this structure and routine, with a clear roadmap to success, is what helps students achieve their potential, whether they're learning from school or from home.
Home education offers wonderful opportunities for personalised learning, and I genuinely enjoy helping students make the most of them. Whether we're planning practical investigations using household materials, tackling tricky exam questions, or simply exploring why the world works the way it does, my goal is always the same: to help students develop confidence, curiosity, and a genuine enjoyment of science.
