American and European society began to switch from agricultural to industrial practices with the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Some of the most notable innovations include the steam engine and the cotton gin.

The Industrial Revolution saw the switch from agriculture to industrial practices. With the introduction of heavy machinery in factories also came the steam train. This allowed more people to travel across the country. So while we see a lot of literature, for example Charles Dickens, that explored and highlighted tough working conditions and poverty, we also see a rise in travel writing
