In Europe, starting first in the UK, this era is known as the Industrial Revolution. It lasted from the mid 1700s to the mid 1800s and was characterised by the development of industrial processes and inventions, such as threshing machines for harvesting wheat and water- or steam/coal-powered spinning mules in factories. Demand for labour led to stark changes in the population as thousands moved to the cities for work.
Much literature at the time was preoccupied with the dramatic shift from rural to urban life and the rapid growth of the industrial landscape. Poets such as William Blake wrote many verses mourning the loss of a bucolic idyll, while authors such as Mary Shelley and Robert Louis Stevenson explored the disquiet of poorly understood scientific advancement and its potential costs for humanity.

The industrial revolution. It began in Britian around the 1780's, but the impact of the revolution wasn't widely noticed until about 1840. Within this era, we saw the invention of the steam engine, which then led to further technological advances in Britian!
