Hi Vern,

In July 1861, the first land battle of the Civil War was fought, about 30 miles outside Washington. It was known by Northerners as Bull Run, and was close enough to the capital for Senators to witness the battle. Hope this helps!

The start of the American Civil war. The first Southern states had seceded but the first real fighting occured at Bull Run. Civiliand came out to watch as as they had expected a 'real war'. It was the start of fighting in Virgina and the two capitaplss, Washington and Richmond were to face off 'Like two Chess pieces on a Board. It was also the battle where Andrew Jackson recieved his nickname, Stonewall Jackson, - as he resited the Union attack 'like a stonewall'
