Hi there!

To answer this question, firstly view the problem as a fraction, as we want 42p as a percentage of 68p we would write that as:

42/68

This is because we are looking for 42p's worth of the original 68p. Convert this fraction into a decimal as we want the answer to be in whole numbers as we are looking for a percentage. To convert from a fraction to a decimal, we simply divide the numbers by each other:

42÷68 = 0.617... (3 Significant figures)

This number we've just got is equal to 1% of the 42p, however, we want 100% of what 42p is equal to, therefore we will just multiply the number we've just got by 100:

0.617 x 100 = 61.76.. (3 significant figures)

Always remember to round to how many significant figures it has asked for, and to put the percentage on the end, so your answer will be 62% (1 significant figure)

(42/68) * 100 = 61.8%

Forty two pence divided by 68… then the answer multiplied by 100. You can round your answer to 1 decimal place if required.

42p would be 61.8% of 68. You have to divide 42 by 68 and multiple the answer by 100 to get the percentage, which I have then rounded up to the first decimal place

Hi Tia

There are many ways that we can look at this but I will give you the way that is easiest to do in the form of text!

So as you may be aware percentages represent parts of a whole- so 50% is the same as saying half of something or 10% is one tenth of the whole thing. In this case we are looking for how much 42p is of 68p. Writing 42p out of 68p mathematically is written as 42/68. This gives you a decimal number (0.618) and to convert decimals to percentages we x 100 giving you 61.8%.

I hope this makes sense but if not please let me know and I will explain in another way :)

Hi everybody. I’m a qualified maths teacher who loves maths

Percentages fractions and decimals are a different way of showing the same information.

So what fraction is 42 out of 68?

42/68= 0.617647058...

but that’s a decimal, so we times by 100 to make it a percentage.

61.76% (to two decimal places)

I would multiply 42p by 100, then divide the result by 68p.

Hi Tia!

To calculate 42p as a percentage of 68p, first let's look at the word percent. If we break it down, "per cent" means "per 100" so anytime a question asks us about percentage, we know the answer is given in terms of "per 100".

Next, we look at what fraction of 68p 42p is. 42 as a fraction of 68 is written as 42/68 which means "42 divided by 68".

Now, to calculate the percentage part, "per 100" can be written as "multiplied by 100".

So the complete calculation will look like:

(42/68) x 100

We put the fraction in brackets because that calculation is done first before multiplying the overall result by 100.

When typing this calculation into the calculator, it equals:

(42/68) x 100 = 61.7647... %

As the answer is not a whole number, the numbers after the decimal point continue so you need to always check what form the question asks you to give your answer in.

In this case I will just round up the percentage to 62%.

I hope you understand the question and feel free to get in touch if there's anything you are unclear on :)

Hi Tia.

To show 42p as a percentage of 68p, you would divide 42 by 68 and then multiply that answer by 100 to give the answer as a percentage.

So the answer would be 61.8% if you wanted it to 1 decimal place or 62% if you wanted it to 0 decimal places.

Hope this makes sense!
