Factorising Quadratics Flashcards

All 4 cards in this deck

What are the steps to factorise x2+bx+cx^2 + bx + c?

e.g. x2+7x+12x^2 + 7x + 12

  1. Find two numbers with product cc and sum bb: product 1212, sum 77 gives 33 and 44
  2. Write the brackets with those numbers: (x+3)(x+4)(x+3)(x+4)

What is the factorised form of a2−b2a^2 - b^2 (the difference of two squares)?

(a+b)(a−b)(a+b)(a-b), in either order.
e.g. x2−y2=(x+y)(x−y)x^2 - y^2 = (x+y)(x-y)

True or false? x2+9x^2 + 9 factorises as (x+3)(x−3)(x+3)(x-3).

False. (x+3)(x−3)=x2−9(x+3)(x-3) = x^2 - 9; a sum of two squares does not factorise.

What are the steps to factorise a difference of two squared brackets?

e.g. (2x+3)2−(2x−5)2(2x+3)^2 - (2x-5)^2

  1. Treat it as A2−B2=(A+B)(A−B)A^2 - B^2 = (A+B)(A-B) with A=2x+3A = 2x+3, B=2x−5B = 2x-5
  2. Simplify each bracket: (4x−2)(8)(4x-2)(8)
  3. Tidy the answer: 16(2x−1)16(2x-1)
