Active Transport Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What is active transport?

The movement of substances across a membrane against a concentration gradient (from low to high concentration), using energy from respiration.

Where does the energy for active transport come from?

Respiration in the cell (which takes place mainly in the mitochondria).

How do root hair cells take up mineral ions from the soil?

By active transport — ions move against the concentration gradient into the cell, using energy from respiration.

True or false? Root hair cells absorb water from the soil by active transport.

False. Water enters root hair cells by osmosis; only mineral ions are taken up by active transport.

Which of diffusion, osmosis and active transport are passive (need no energy from respiration)?

Diffusion and osmosis are passive and move substances down a concentration gradient; only active transport requires energy.

Give one example of active transport in the human digestive system.

Glucose is absorbed from the small intestine into the blood by active transport, even when the blood glucose concentration is higher.
