Mutations Flashcards

All 5 cards in this deck

What is a mutation?

A random change in the base sequence of DNA, which can produce a new allele of a gene.

How does genetic variation within a population of a species arise?

Through mutations, which produce new alleles; these are then spread and combined by sexual reproduction.

What are the three possible effects a mutation can have on the phenotype?

Most have no effect; some have a small effect; rarely, a single mutation significantly affects the phenotype.

True or false? Most mutations change an organism's phenotype.

False. Most mutations have no effect on the phenotype at all.

True or false? There is usually extensive genetic variation within a population of a species.

True. Mutations over time produce many different alleles within the population.
