Discovery & Development of New Drugs Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What are the four main stages in developing a new medicine?

Discovery, development, preclinical testing, clinical testing.

What happens during preclinical testing of a new medicine?

The drug is tested on cultured cells and tissues, then on animals, to check toxicity, efficacy and a suitable dose.

What happens during clinical testing of a new medicine?

It is tested on healthy volunteers at low doses to check safety, then on patients to find the optimum dose and check it works.

What is a placebo in a drug trial?

A treatment with no active drug in it, given to a control group so the drug's effect can be compared with it.

What is a double-blind trial?

A trial in which neither the patient nor the doctor knows who is getting the drug and who is getting the placebo, which prevents bias.

True or false? A new medicine is first tested on human patients with the disease.

False. It is first tested on cultured cells and animals (preclinical), then on healthy volunteers, before patients.
