Atomic Structure Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

Describe the structure of an atom.

A nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons arranged in shells.

What is the relative charge and relative mass of a proton?

Charge +1+1, mass 11.

What is the relative charge and relative mass of a neutron?

Charge 00, mass 11.

What is the relative charge and relative mass of an electron?

Charge −1-1, mass very small (about 11835\frac{1}{1835}).

Why does an atom have no overall electrical charge?

It contains equal numbers of protons and electrons, so the +1+1 and −1-1 charges cancel out.

True or false? An atom is neutral because it has equal numbers of protons and neutrons.

False. It is neutral because it has equal numbers of protons and electrons; neutrons have no charge.
