Group 0 Flashcards
All 6 cards in this deck
Where in the periodic table are the noble gases found, and what do all their atoms have in common?
Group 0, the far right-hand column; their atoms have a full outer shell of electrons.
Why are the noble gases chemically inert?
They have full outer shells, so they do not gain, lose, transfer or share electrons.
True or false? Helium is inert because it has 8 electrons in its outer shell.
False. Helium has 2 electrons, which completely fills its only shell.
Which two properties make helium suitable for filling balloons?
It is inert (unreactive) and it is less dense than air.
Why is argon used as the atmosphere for welding metals and for filling lamps?
It is inert and non-flammable, so it does not react with the hot metal or filament.
What are the steps to predict the boiling point of a noble gas from data on the other noble gases?
e.g. predict the boiling point of krypton, given argon C and xenon C
- Find its position in Group 0: krypton lies between argon and xenon.
- Recall the trend: boiling point increases going down Group 0.
- Give a value between the two: about C.
