Addition Polymers Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What is the equation for the formation of poly(ethene) from ethene?

n CH2=CH2→−(CH2−CH2)n−n\,\mathrm{CH_2{=}CH_2} \rightarrow -(\mathrm{CH_2-CH_2})_n-

What are the steps to draw the repeating unit of an addition polymer from its monomer?
e.g. propene, CH2=CH−CH3\mathrm{CH_2{=}CH-CH_3}

  1. Change the C=C to a single C–C bond.
  2. Draw a continuation bond out of each end carbon.
  3. Keep all the other atoms/groups where they are: −CH2−CH(CH3)−-\mathrm{CH_2-CH(CH_3)}-

What are the steps to deduce the monomer from the repeating unit of an addition polymer?
e.g. repeating unit −CH2−CHCl−-\mathrm{CH_2-CHCl}-

  1. Remove the two continuation bonds.
  2. Change the C–C single bond between them to a C=C double bond.
  3. Leave all other atoms unchanged: monomer is CH2=CHCl\mathrm{CH_2{=}CHCl} (chloroethene)

Give one property of poly(ethene) that makes it suitable for making containers and bags.

It is inert/unreactive and waterproof, and can be moulded into shape without breaking.

Which properties of PTFE (poly(tetrafluoroethene)) make it suitable for coating non-stick pans?

It is very unreactive, heat resistant and has a slippery, non-stick surface.

True or false? PVC is used to coat electrical wires because it conducts electricity.

False. PVC is used because it is a tough, flexible electrical insulator.
