Group 0 Flashcards
All 6 cards in this deck
What is the name given to group 0 in the periodic table?
The noble gases (sometimes called the inert gases).
In terms of outer shell electrons, why are the noble gases chemically inert?
Their atoms have a full (complete) outer shell, so they do not gain, lose, transfer or share electrons.
True or false? Argon is used instead of air in filament light bulbs because argon has a low density.
False. Argon is used because it is unreactive (inert), so it does not react with the hot metal filament.
Why is helium, rather than hydrogen or krypton, used to fill airships?
Helium is non-flammable (hydrogen is flammable and could ignite) and it is less dense than air (krypton is more dense than air, so the airship would not float).
What happens to the density, melting point and boiling point of the noble gases going down group 0?
They all increase going down the group.
What are the colour and physical state of the noble gases at room temperature?
They are all colourless gases.
