Empirical Formulae Flashcards

All 4 cards in this deck

What is an empirical formula?

The formula showing the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.

What is the empirical formula of butene, C4H8\mathrm{C_4H_8}?

CH2\mathrm{CH_2} — divide both numbers by 4 to get the simplest ratio.

How is the molecular formula related to the empirical formula and the relative molecular mass?

Multiply every number in the empirical formula by (relative molecular mass ÷ mass of the empirical formula unit).

True or false? For some compounds the empirical formula and the molecular formula are the same.

True. If the formula is already the simplest ratio they are the same, e.g. H2O\mathrm{H_2O} and CO2\mathrm{CO_2}.
