Ions Flashcards

All 5 cards in this deck

What is an ion?

An atom or group of atoms with a positive or negative charge.

What are the names for a positively charged ion and a negatively charged ion?

Positive ion = cation; negative ion = anion.

What charge does an ion of an element in group 1, 2, 6 or 7 have?

Group 1: ++, group 2: 2+2+, group 6: 2−2-, group 7: −-.

How do you find the number of electrons in a simple ion?

Positive ion: electrons = atomic number − size of the charge.
Negative ion: electrons = atomic number + size of the charge.

Why do atoms of elements in groups 1, 2, 6 and 7 lose or gain electrons to form ions?

To get a full outer shell of electrons: a stable electronic configuration, like that of a noble gas.
