There are two ways to think about this.

Keep adding a quarter 5 times

1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4

Multiply two fractions

5 as a fraction is 5/1 so...

5/1 x 1/4 = ?

Multiply the numerators (5 x 1 = 5)

Multiply the denominators (1 x 4 = 4)

So your numerator is 5 and your denominator is 4...

ANSWER is 5/4

5 x 1/4 = 1.25

because: 1/4 is the same as 0.25

5 x 0.25 = 1.25

or: 5 can be imagined as 5/1, therefore you do 5/1 x 1/4 = 5/4 = 1.25

1.25, or 5/4, expressed as either a decimal or a fraction. :)

To multiply a fraction by an integer (a whole number, 5 in this case), simply multiple the top number of the fraction - this gives you: 5 x 1 / 4, which equals 5/4 (5 quarters - 1/4, of course, is 1 quarter). You can then simplify this further to 4/4 and 1/4. 4/4 is of course, 1, so the answer is 1 and 1/4. Or, 1.25.

1/4 = 0.25 because 0.25 x 4 = 1. You can express this formulaically as follows:

1/4 - x = 0

1/4 = x (add x to both sides)

1 = 4x (multiply both sides by 4)

1 divided by 4, of course, will be less than 1 - let's make it easier by using y, where y = 100x.

100 = 4y

100/4 = y

100 divided by 4 is 25, so 25 = y. Remember that y = 100x, so:

25 = 100x.

Let's divide 25 by 100. We do this by moving the decimal point LEFT the the number of zeroes there are in 100.

So...

25.0 -> 2.5 (moved once) -> 0.25 (moved twice).

x = 0.25

There are many different ways to think about this - the best method is what you find easiest to visualise!

1) 1/4 is 0.25 ; 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 1.25

2) 5/1 x 1/4 = 5/4 5/4 = 1.25

First what you would need to do is make 5 a fraction. We do this simply by placing a 1 on the denominator, since 5 divided by 1 is just 5.

Now we have:

5/1 x 1/4

When multiplying fractions, all you need to do is multiply your numerators and multiply your denominators separately.

So for the numerator, you would do 5 x 1 = 5

And for the denominator, you would do 1 x 4 = 4.

Therefore, 5 x 1/4 = 5/4, aka five quarters.

Times means multiplication.so 5times of 1/4 implies 5*1/4=5/4

5 x 1/4 = 1.25. This would be the answer in a decimal format. You can think about this question as 'what is 1/4 of 5' as the multiplication sign can be considered as replacing the word 'of' here. So, half of 5 is 2.5 and half of 2.5 is 1.25 (if you half something and then half it again, it is the same as taking a quarter - think about when you cut a cake)

5 times 1/4 =1.25

  1. Think of a round pizza
  2. Cut pizza into 4 quarters (4/4)
  3. We need 1 more quarter to equal 5 times.

4 quarters of the pizza is 1 (whole) + 1 quarter = 1 1/4

Half of 5 = 2.5

Half of 2.5 = 1.25

If you half something and then half it again, it is the same as a quarter (think of our pizza)

5 times 1/4 =1.25

5 divided by 1/4 =0.25

0.25 x 5 =1.25
